We Build Your Dreams On Wheels
My journey from Iraq to America taught me about resilience, community, and the power of support. I arrived here, like so many others, as a refugee—grateful, hopeful, and deeply aware of the kindness strangers extended to me and my family. I carry that gratitude with me every day and am committed to paying it forward, sharing the blessings I received with others who now find themselves in similar places of need and transition.
When I established The Yard at Montavilla, it was more than just a food cart pod. It was a vision to bring people together, to create a place where diverse cultures meet over shared meals, stories, and friendships. For me, food is a powerful symbol of heritage and pride, a way to celebrate our roots while building new connections in our communities. Every cart at The Yard tells a story, every dish carries a memory, and together, they reflect the beautiful diversity that enriches our city.

Volunteering is a powerful way to connect with one’s community, fostering mutual growth and support. At the heart of every major faith, volunteering is more than an act; it’s a transformation from “me” to “we.” This journey has been central to my life. I know the power of community support firsthand, having come to America as a refugee, seeking shelter after my childhood home was destroyed. Strangers welcomed my family, offering warmth, food, and comfort when we needed it most. Now, I am dedicated to paying it forward, helping refugees and immigrants build lives filled with opportunity. To date, I’ve helped nearly 20 families establish food carts, brick-and-mortar eateries, and more, creating an atmosphere of shared heritage in Oregon.
One of my proudest accomplishments has been establishing The Yard at Montavilla, a vibrant food cart pod that brings together cultures through food. Each dish served here represents a part of someone’s life, memories, and heritage. I wanted a space where the aroma of kebabs, shawarma, curry, and Turkish coffee would fill the air, and every visitor would feel a little closer to the people behind each dish. Food is a universal language, and at The Yard, it translates to joy and shared experience.
Creating this pod has been a journey of love. I worked on everything from designing business plans for each cart to curating the images and menus that best represented each culture. For me, it’s not just about helping people start businesses; it’s about creating a space where the broader community can connect with new flavors and stories. Through The Yard, I’m able to help immigrants and refugees showcase the beauty of their heritage while establishing roots here in Oregon.
My first project, a small food cart called Shish Kabab in downtown Portland, taught me the ins and outs of the industry. Strategically located in a high-traffic area, it quickly became a popular spot. Building this cart required resilience, attention to detail, and, above all, a commitment to quality. Later, I launched Shawarma Express, modeled after my experiences in Iraq. My goal was to bring a taste of my homeland to Portland and to help other refugees find a sense of pride in sharing their culture.
Each project has taught me about patience, resilience, and the importance of community. As I help new business owners navigate the maze of permits, inspections, and food sourcing, I remember my own journey and the people who helped me along the way. Now, my dream is to assist even more newcomers in turning their hopes into thriving businesses, celebrating every success, big or small, as a step toward a better future.
Beyond food, my volunteer work has extended to supporting the refugee community in other ways. Through my involvement with organizations like the Iraqi Society of Oregon, IRCO, Lutheran Community Service, and The Islamic Association, I’ve worked with families, seniors, and youth, helping them navigate the many challenges of resettling in a new country. From arranging medical appointments and transportation to organizing donation drives for clothing, blankets, and everyday essentials, I’ve strived to provide tangible support.
During donation drives, I’ve been moved by the generosity of my community. Friends, schools, and local businesses have come together to donate items like clothing, shoes, and food. I designated a room in my home as a donation center, where people could contribute items for refugees who had little more than the clothes they arrived in. This shared effort has made a profound impact on the lives of over 200 families.
Health care is a crucial need, especially for refugees who often face intensified health risks. From facilitating vaccinations to coordinating family medical appointments, I’ve aimed to ensure that refugees have access to essential health services. For many families, especially those with young children, there are significant risks due to a lack of immunization. By helping families keep track of vaccination records and organizing group immunization events, I hope to bridge some of the gaps in healthcare accessibility.
Volunteering has been deeply fulfilling, but it comes with challenges. The work is demanding, and it’s easy to feel emotionally overwhelmed by the stories and struggles of the people I meet. Refugees come from harrowing situations, often facing trauma, loss, and cultural barriers that are hard to navigate. At times, the exhaustion is real. But even in these difficult moments, the resilience and gratitude of the people I help renew my commitment to this work.
I’ve also been fortunate to witness success stories that make every challenge worthwhile. Through my connections, I’ve helped secure educational scholarships for bright young refugees, bringing hope and a path forward. I’ve seen small businesses grow and families thrive, each success a testament to the strength of community and the power of giving.
My life is driven by the desire to create a world where everyone—regardless of background—feels welcomed and valued. I know the power of being supported in times of need, and I strive to extend that same support to others. My hope is that the phrase “American food” will one day encompass flavors from every corner of the world, from gyros and shawarma to ramen and enchiladas.
This work isn’t just about giving back; it’s about building a future where diversity is celebrated, and every culture is given a seat at the table. Each dish shared, each smile exchanged, and each hand extended in friendship brings us one step closer to that vision.
Volunteering has taught me that we’re all connected. As I continue my work, I’m reminded that giving to others enriches not just those I serve but also my own life in ways I never anticipated. Together, we’re building a stronger, more compassionate world—one meal, one smile, and one act of kindness at a time.
Throughout my years volunteering, I’ve learned that supporting others is not just a responsibility—it’s a privilege. From helping families start their own businesses to providing resources for refugees in need, my work is driven by the belief that everyone deserves a chance to succeed, to feel welcomed, and to find joy in their new home. I am continually inspired by the resilience of those I meet, the families who rebuild their lives from the ground up, and the young people who pursue their dreams against all odds.
